I don't think I've seen a gasket kit that had a front crank seal that used a felt like the original seal did. The felt that comes in the gasket package is for the water pump.
Originally the seal had a felt side and a leather side. The leather side went toward the engine with the felt facing the pulley The lip on the leather seal actually also faced the pulley rather than the oil side as seal normally would be installed. It was designed more to keep dust out of the engine more than to keep the oil in. The oil slinger between the crank pulley and the timing gear keep the oil away from the seal. With the modern replacement seal you will want to install it with the lip facing the oil side or else the tension spring will rust off.
