Have you pulled the pan to look at the crank in your 1086? If the crank mics OK maybe you could consider doing an in frame? I did an in frame of my 1086 at 10000 hours and at that time the crank measured out at factory specs. It has 6500 hours of mostly hard work on the in frame and uses no oil and starts real well and the oil pressure is great.
The head could get real expensive if valves and seats need to be replaced so that's an unknown. If you are able to do engine work yourself, mic the crank and pull the head and send it to a machine shop to have it checked out. If you can get by with a simple valve grind and resurfacing and the crank is OK an in frame won't be very spendy. If the crank is out of specs and the head needs valves and seats the dollars will add up to probably more than the cost of a used engine. Remember, a used engine is just that-a used engine. Good luck and let us know what you end up doing. Jim
