I'm not positive about this because it's been a long time, but I think it's a "pilot operated check valve", wherein you have to pressurize it "down" to open the check to return the fluid from the bottom end of the cylinder. Easy way to check that is if you have some weight on the drawbar or an implement, with the engine not running, operate the valve to lower the implement. If it does not lower, it's a pilot operated check valve. If it does lower slowly, it's a metering valve, but I'm thinking it will not lower. You can buy either type "aftermarket", but you may need to go to a specialty hydraulic sales place and not to a TSC or whatever farm store you have. Some FELs have these on the bucket, so the bucket will not dump accidentally... might find one of these.

Today's Featured Article - Oil Bath Air Filters - by Chris Pratt. Some of us grew up thinking that an air filter was a paper thing that allowed air to pass while trapping dirt particles of a particles of a certain size. What a surprise to open up your first old tractor's air filter case and find a can that appears to be filled with the scrap metal swept from around a machine shop metal lathe. To top that off, you have a cup with oil in it ("why would you want to lubricate your carburetor?"). On closer examination (and some reading in a AC D-14 service manual), I found out that this is a pretty ingenious method of cleaning the air in the tractor's intake tract.
