With a loop of metal holding it up, and allowing it to slide left to right. There was also a roller used to allow smooth movement. When pulling a disk, drag, or harrow, the drawbar is allowed to swing from full left to full right. This makes turning easier and more safe, as the pivot point is in front of the wheels. Jim
