I would check the obvious first such as cap, wires, timing etc. Backfires can be caused by several things from valves hanging open to worn cams. Run a compression check and also take off the valve cover and while the engine is running or being cranked watch your valve train to visually see if all rocker arms are moving about the same distance. If you have something like a bad cam or broken push rod you will see it.
