On page 6 of my original 656 Operator's manual the Fuel System section for gasoline engines states "Use clean fuel having a minimum octane rating of 93 (research method). It has also been discussed on this forum numerous times and using fuel of a lesser rating in the IHC six cylinder engines can lead to engine damage from pre-ignition. Sure it is somewhat of an inconvenience and I have a separate tank and haul it from town in a 100 gallon tank and fill the tractor from my pick-up. I have never used the tractor for any tillage work so fuel usage hasn't been that much of a real issue. I would rather error on the side of caution instead of destroying a really good tractor and engine. You may be just lucky or have your tractor detuned for the 87 octane fuel you are using but luck usually isn't my friend and I'm not a gambler, Hal.
