Stress Cracks on Rod Bolt Flat Washers

Last night I was cleaning my Farmall M rodbolts and noticed that most of the flat washers between the rod bolt head and locking tab were stress cracked. The cracks covered the circumference of the washer. Some of the cracks penetrated 95% of the washer thickness. I counted 22 cracks on one washer alone. I called Case IH and they had the washers for $1.40 each. $11.20 is cheap for what could have happened when these washers broke apart. Is this cracking common in Farmall engines?
