all good advice, but ya gotta solve this first. An inline filter won't help this much debris. It'll just do its job, even better than a screen...and then plug up too.
When you clean the tank, don't forget the inside of the metal gas line. Amazing amount of trash in them.
Really troublesome tanks, sometimes after cleaning, a very strong magnet stuck on the outside bottom away from the outlet a bit will grab some flakes and pin them.
When you are flushing an old tank with high pressure water, go medieval on the bottom of it with your rubber hammer.
(If it won't take moderate rubber hammer blows, ya need another tank anyway)
