IH had listings of every part number used in tractors, power units, small engines, and crawlers up until about the mid-60's in a paper book. Part number referred you to what catalog the part was used in. IIRC, the book numbers were 19-XP_ and the last one was maybe 19-XPG? The last ones were probably 3-4 inches thick. Dealers were instructed to "destroy" the older catalogs when newer ones came out. I've never found/seen a paper catalog that referenced all of the machinery parts, but they probably exist.
Parts index microfiche cards were available that listed part numbers, or at least most numbers still in production and those recently discontinued, and referenced the machine that number was used on. Later indexes/indicies will probably not reference items like horse-drawn equipment and F-series tractors.
I think this information was available on microfilm, too.
