I've seen plenty of tractors with old car mufflers stuffed on them to quiet them down. Usually the mufflers are recycled after they've fallen off the car they were originally installed on. I'd imagine a new muffler would work even better.
Preferably you'd want a muffler with the inlet and outlet centered. It just looks kinda goofy with them offset.
Another option: A "restoration quality" muffler is designed to original factory specs and will be quieter than a straight pipe.
