In the situation you cite (If you try lifting something, and it won't lift, you could be blowing oil past the cyl. piston but not leaking) you fail to acknowledge that the valve and cylinder are open to the pump on one side and also open to the reservoir and cylinder on the other side. In other words the low pressure side that is receiving the blow-by oil can send the excess back to the reservoir.
