Cutout Relay or Regulator?

I read in a previous post that its possible to remove the cutout relay and replace it with a regulator. I have a Cub that the previous owner changed to a regulator instead of the cutout. Though the charging system has never worked since I've owned it. The regulator setup appears to have been wired correctly. It still has the 6 volt positive ground system and I know the generator #1101355 is ok for it charges if I ground the F terminal. The four position light switch powers the lights correctly, but I haven't checked to see if it has higher resistance in the Low position.(Field wire from switch to Gen is disconnected) Any ideas as to what resistance it should read using a decent ohmmeter? Assuming the switch is ok, what would be the better way to go, put a cutout back in or another regulator? Can I use any 6 volt regulator, and just not use the L term, if equipped? Thanks for your help, am learning alot from this site.
