The number one cylinder is closest to rad. Number four closest to gas tank. Rotate magneto coupling until rotor botton points to number one posiiton on distributor cap. Crank engine until number one cylinder is on the compression stroke at TDC, then install the magneto with top toward engine as far as possible. Rotate the engine one full revolution just until number one cylinder as at TDC again (but magneto hasn't tripped), then losen magneto slightly and roate top away from engine until magneto trips. BTW, if you solve your backfire problem, let me know. I'm working ona similar problem myself.
