Mike you are correct on your assumption of a bad bearing. You can remove the oil seal retainer assembly and should beable to see the bearing, or what is left of it. From looking at the parts illustration, I cannot tell if the PTO shaft must be pulled in order to replace that bearing or not. I am sure someone else will have the correct procedure before the day is out.
