They do slide in and out quite a bit normally. One other thing that goes unnoticed a lot is that the inner end of the shaft is supported inside the differential. When the differential gears get worn this allows that end of the shaft to move up and down and allows the bearing on pinion to wear back and forth in it's housing. That is one thing they finally fixed with the 656 rear end by adding a needle bearing or bushing in differential carrier to support that inner end of shaft. This is also why putting in new bearings does not MAKE IT AS GOOD AS NEW as housings that hold the bearings also wear. Even axle housings wallow out and don't support bearings like they did when tractor was new.
