Drop the Pan! you can catch and reuse if the oil is really clean, If it has settled out and you find a bunch of other nastyness. or metal in the bottom of the pan. You can do a visual and hard check of the Crank and Rods to see if something is a miss. Another thought is the top of the piston seperated from the main body of the piston & shirts and the piston is "Slapping" together when running, with No fire going to that spark plug to send the top portion down on the power stroke the top may very well stay up at the top end of the stroke so NO Slapping, Knocking sounds occurs when the spark plug wire is removed!
