The red Oxide primer or sealer was actually put on for a couple purposes. First raw castings were mostly stored outside, so the sealer protected them from rust. Second, raw castings could have trace bits of sand clinging to their surface that could fall off inside the gearbox or engine. Third reason was improved oil drainback. Forth was the porosity issue mentioned before. As I understand it every foundry could use whatever color primer they wanted. The dull dark red was most popular. The machine tool company I used to work for used a "Transmission Sealer" that was a heavy thick yellow epoxy.
