The original manuals for the TA equipped M, 300 and 400 specified gear oil (80w?). That was what I put in mine when I replaced the 4 gallon of water and 6 gallon of oil that was in the transmission when I bought it in 1998. Later I learned it should have been replaced with Hytran (or equivilent). But I figured the fresh oil had to be better than the oil/water combination that came out (it was also heavy gear oil). I never used the TA in the winter and hardly ever used it in the summer. 10 years later I finally drained the heavy oil out and replaced it with 303 trans hydraulic fluid from Orschlens. Still don't use the TA in the winter and barely use it in the summer.
