Sure it can work if done perfectly correct, but lots of hack jobs out there ended up cutting the sheet metal to accommodate the big bodied Delco alternator. Regardless a Delco is still a real tight fit even on an M and the Hitachi fits so much better.
Unless you got a freebie Delco laying in your scrap pile it is just so much easier to use the little Hitachi. Price wise it is a wash if you purchasing from an auto parts store. The wiring is exactly the same if you go the most prefered method to do it using 3 wires.
Yeah lots of people go the easey 1 wire route but those do not charge at low rpm when wired like that. 3 wires always charge regardless of rpm. The 3 wire is a much better deal whether you use the Delco or the Hitachi.
