Thanks guys for the information. it was very helpful.
In another thread I had mentioned that the front wheels seemed out of sync. I figured out what the problem was. The pitman arm on the left side wasn't placed on the splined gear box shaft correctly. Whoever worked on it last had even maked the parts with a chisel, but still had it off the mark by four or five splines. I pulled the pitman arm off, straightened the left wheel to match the right side wheel, and put the pitman arm back on. Now it steers as it should.
Another problem I was having with this tractor was that it would only run with the choke all the way out. I figured that the carburetor was gummed up from sitting unused for a time. I put two cans of Seafoam in the tank the other day. When I ran it today the carburetor worked just fine. Anyone else use Seafoam? I usually am not a mechanic in a can believer, but this stuff has pulled my butt out of the soup quite a few times.
