Don, I like the '74 series of tractors. The ones with the Robt. Bosch injector pump that has a start position on the fuel shutoff lever are more desireable for starting in cold climates. These tractors have heavy transmissions and rearends. The front axle could be stronger for a loader but I have not seen one that has failed in this area. The weak points are that the hydraulics must be maintained with clean filters and hy-tran. The brakes, steering and pto clutch are all controlled through one major valve. The saddle tank is subject to rust in the bottom portions, look for seepage. The shift linkage can cause problems if it has not been lubed over the years. Overhaul kits for the engines are expensive compared to other engines. A danger with these tractors is that when dismounting, the operator can accidentally knock the shift linkage from neutral into gear. Case IH tractors being built up until the last few years still had running gear almost identical to the "74s. Look under the sheet metal of one of the newer 60 HP models and you will recognize the old design.
