I have changed the clutch in my 1952 WD-9 through the top--no splitting required. The shop manual I have said that was the way to do it so I gave it a try. I stripped the tractor down to expose the bell housing. It has been several years since I did it but I do recall saying many times "there is no way to get this thing out, whoever wrote that manual must have been........." and low and behold once I got it at the right angle it came out through the top like the manual said. So, yes it can be done on the newer 9 series tractors as well.
