So a few months ago I burt the head gasket between cylinders 2 and 3... After I had the head rebuilt and bought a new gasket set, I thought it would be prudent of me to go ahead and do the bottom half of the engine too. So I just pulled the block and am shipping it off to the machine shop for a rebuild too.
My question is: I'm thinking that with 120 ft lbs of torque for 50 years the old head bolts are probably not going to cut it on the new build. The dealer wants $8 per bolt for IH parts. That's $80 in head bolts alone. Can I use a standard grade 8, 1/2" x 6" bolt? Besides the threads on the shaft I don't see a difference in the bolts. Am I setting myself up for an expensive fix if I snap a non-IH bolt?
The original head bolts were REALLY tight getting them out and I can't guarantee that they haven't stretched and $80 for 10 bolts seems terribly high. Any suggestions, comments, or advice is greatly welcomed! Thanks in advance.
