Hi RR, I use the RPM method for timing engines. 1) Set the RPM to approx 1500rpm. This is not critical but only has to get the engine operating on the main jet and not on the idle jet. 2) advance the distributor until the engine misses , then retard until the miss stops, then retard another 40rpm and lock the distributor. I have used this method for the past 30yrs and it works very well. It will take you a few tries to get it correct the first time. What I also found, is pratice on a known good engine. Put on a timing light and check the exisiting timing and write this down. Then time by the method I just described above, then recheck with the timing light, if done correct then you will see the marks you saw with the timing light when you first started. Why I use this method is it takes into account all worn parts. After awhile you won't even use a tach. Also I have not tried this method on any newer engines, 1990 on, but it should work. T_Bone
