Dan, you are correct. You can isolate the alternator but it requires a fairly high amp switch or a battery disconnect. The battery disconnects that are used on antique/collector cars work and are cheap. My gripe is that you have to pay more for the one wire alternators and most of them have this problem. I have been told it has to do with the price and design of the regulator used by the rebuilder.
