Is your smoke from running rich or burning oil? If its running rich a carb rebuild it pretty cheap. Burning oil in a lot more expensive. In either case using a hotter spark plug will help unless you are already running a hotter plug. The plugs listed in manuals when the tractor was made aren't hot enough for todays gas. You can also check compression to see if its an engine problem. If you have to rebuild the engine and can do it your self it will be a lot cheaper than buying something newer. Rebuilding those old engines isn't complicated if you have some tools and a little mechanical ability. You can get manuals with lots of information. Chances are real good if you take it apart it will need a valve job and at least rings. Other stuff such as sleaves, depends on the amount of wear.
