I'd like a SMTA to restore and have for a personal show and parade tractor....But I wouldn't put a MD engine in it even if the engine was proved to be good and given to me. I admit I've never owned or used an IH gas start diesel, but everyone of them I've ever seen was a virtual dog compared to the gas models of the same vintage. True, they got a little better fuel ecomony, but with the reduced power and their "gotta be careful" shortcomings, they just didn't inpress me much.. A buddy of mine bought a brand new 450 diesel and put it under a new picker...complete with a supersnoot and two years later the head was found to be cracked in 8 places. I once owned and wore out a Super M gas and it would outhorse any Super MD or Super MTA diesel I ever saw and it's only upgrade was it had the 4 1/8 sleeves and pistons in it. Sorry, JMHO of course...
