When I converted my H to 12 volts in about '88 I left the starter 6 volts and it would do as you say,,,SLAM into the flywheel, but it sure would start good!!! Everyone said leave it alone, it will not hurt anything. A few years later, on occasion, the starter would Lock into the flywheel but I could unlock it by loosening the starter or putting the tractor in gear and rocking it. After about a year of that aggravation I pulled the starter and discovered that the flywheel teeth in ONE spot had been severely chipped from I suppose the starter slamming into it. I had the starter rebuilt to 12 volts and dressed up the flywheel teeth a bit and haven't had a problem since. Thank God I didn't have to replace the flywheel. Now you MAY get away with a 6 volt starter and you may not,,,, Wanna take a chance?????
