Not needed if the Gen mounting brackets and adjuster strut are unpainted where they bolt to the engine and bolt to the gen. There must be a metal to metal path for the ground circuit to the engine block. If it is not a delco, make sure the regulator is designed for the application. Smoke can indicate lack of function. Jim
