My guess would be SMTA or more likely a 400 rearend (with factory TA delete) transplanted.

Is the PTO live or not? (Does the PTO stop when you push foot clutch in)?

Record each gears mph speed at WOT. While this will not directly answer your PTO question it will give you a clue as to whether or not your rearend is orginal to a 1948 m. You can do this with a modern GPS or alternatively measure the distance between 2 known points like fenceposts or trees and then use a stopwatch to see how much time in seconds it takes to cover the known distance between the two points (try to have at least 100 feet but anything closer to 200 feet or more is better as your travel zone. No need to hit an exact number either. The longer you make your 2 points then the the less error you will have in your calculations but it does take more effort to measure longer distances out with a tape measure too. Finally do some math to convert your recordings to to mph. Once you know each gears mph speed at WOT then you can then look at speed charts to determine if you have standard M gears or (Super M, Super MTA gears, or 400 gears). For example a regular m will do like 5.2 mph in 4th gear where a super or 400 will be like 6.6 mph in 4th gear both at WOT and with stock size tires of course.

Try looking at the casting codes on the rearend. Deciphering the casting codes can determine year and model.
