12 Volt will turn the starter faster thereby covering up a lot of tune up problems. 6 Volts turns the starter plenty fast enough provided: The tractor is tuned up properly The battery is charged Large enough cables are used from battery to starter Battery and starter connections are clean and tight Remember, most of these old tractors were made that they could be hand started. Electric start was an option for many years and 6 volts sure beats a hand crank in my book. There is no question that the 6 volt system requires a bit more attention to maintenance. If you want originality, keep the 6 volt system. If you are having problems, and you need reliability on a working tractor, check out the article archives on the left. There are several articles on the subject, including a step by step guide for the conversion process.
