The cable on our H wasn't stuck when we bought it, but it was mildly hard to move. We took the cable off in order to take it out of its sheeth. After taking it out of the sheeth, we rubbed it down for awhile with emory cloth untill we could see that the cable was smooth. We then oiled it and put it back in the sheeth, and now it works great.
Unfortunately, you will have to take the tranny cover off to declamp the cable from the shifter arm, but it's worth it when you can use the 9-speed! All this was for an H but your W-6 should be similar (linkage and what not). Be sure to hook up the cable on the shifter exactly as it came off-- length of cable past the shifter-- you'll be able to see what I mean when you do it.
