I too worked on a dairy farm in high school. Closest thing I've found to heaven. 2 brothers started and ran the operation. Farmed about 600 acres, averaged 55 milkers. They had to sell out 2 years ago (after 10 yrs) due to falling milk & grain prices. Now one is a welder and the other works on an assembly line. If I were you, and hope to be soon- (start my own small operation).. Start with crops and build your machinery stock up until you have the resources to support livestock. Remember you won't likely want to milk by hand and auto milkers are high dollar. Let alone the milk tank. Just for resource, I think when the 2 brothers got started, they both got $80,000 loans each. But built a 4x4 pit style parlor.. State of the art! Moral of the story? Not sure, but my milk isn't any cheaper at the store! Good luck and keep us posted!
