The narrow front was standard on the Farmall tractors, and was extremely popular for farmers producing row crops (corn, soybeans, etc.). IH sold bolt-on cultivators which mounted on the tractor frame rails and the improved vision allowed by the narrow front made it much easier to keep the cultivator blades between the rows. These days, more/most weed control is done via herbicides, and the narrow front is much less popular (if any are produced at all). A wide front was available as a factory option over at least part of the H's production run, and aftermarket conversions are not uncommon. IH did produce a separate, "standard" (wide-front) tractor version which shared some parts with the H. It was called the W4 and sold under the McCormick brand name (I think, anyway it was not a "Farmall"). This was more popular in the west where small grains predominated, and sometimes was referred to as the Wheatlands model.
