I too have often wondered how the model designations were obtained. I can you tell one about the John Deere G. When John Deere made the decision to produce them originally it was to have been designated the model F. All G, and its succeeding models have part numbers that start with the letter F. This was John Deere practice at the time. When introduction time was near it was decided to name it the model G because they wanted complete distinction from the IHC F series then in production.
