When a similar thing happened with my 300U it had me scratching my head for awhile. It ended up being stripped threads in the pump where the manifold from the reservoir bolts up. The previous owner had apparently not realized the housing was aluminum and torqued the bolts until they stripped, and when I touched the manifold with my foot it would flex enough I would lose suction. My screen is probably clogged also, but I haven't gotten around to fixing that. The stripped bolts were easy, though. I just put helicoils in the housing and new O-rings and it works fine.
