Do the gauges and warning lights work? If not, you likely have a blown fuse coming from the key switch that can indeed prevent it from charging. Either that, or the wire fell off the key switch. Usually, this fuse is accessible by pulling out the dash and looking for the inline fuse holder. As I recall, it's 3 amp, but don't quote me on that. It's labeled "Fuse & Amp" in the wiring diagram.
