Stan, this rig was used to tromp down cotton in a wagon. The picker would dump into the wagon and the the cotton would be all fluffed up - Two dumps and the wagon would look almost full. This rig could pull back and forth along the side of the wagon and reach over into it and pack the cotton down. Then two more pickers could dump without spilling a lot of cotton over the side of the wagon. The packer would then come back and knock that down. We would usually send a wagon on to the gin with 4 dumps until the the gin got busy and empty wagons started getting scarce. Then we might stay on them longer with the packers and put 6 or 7 dumps on each one.
