Sunday dinner at Grandma's was usually fried chicken She'd tie their feet to the clothes line and dispatch them with a butcher knife (still have the knife - an old JA Henkel with half the blade worn away from sharpening). Then my mom and my Aunt Dorothy would take them out behind the house and pluck them - all the feathers saved for pillow making in a big tick they kept in the wash house.
The feet were her special treat - boiled up and gnawed clean at the table. Quite a sight - that old lady worrying those feet like a dog with a new bone ;-) God I miss her and sharing the simple life they enjoyed.
