Since I was off today, I decided to bust down my steering box and see just how bad it was. I felt some grinding when I was steering it into my garage a few months ago, and knew there was water in it, just like everything else on this tractor. When I pulled off the steering sector cover plates, I was very surprised to see nice black flowable grease in the box. The steering sectors are in pristine condition, as is the ball nut assembly. The upper shaft parts (close to the steering wheel) are gonners, as is the upper steering shaft bearings, but everything below that, including the lower bearings and race, are in excellent condition. There was water in the steering box, but the grease kept it off the parts. I am pretty pleased with this unexpected surprise. Now a few questions - how do you get the upper bearing race out of the bottom of the steering shaft tube? I don't have anything that long and don't even know if you can get a good angle to pound it out from the top of the steering shaft... Next - can you add another sector shaft oil seal and leave the old one in, like you can on the 8N tractors - or do you HAVE to remove the old seal first? If you have to remove it, what is the best way? The I&T manual does not tell how to replace this seal. Finally - the top of my steering shaft is pretty rusted out. Is there supposed to be a "lip" about 2" down from the top of the steering shaft? I see remnants of something, but do not know if it is needed to hold the column bearing assembly in place. Overall - another good surpise on Project Rustbucket! TIA, Dan

The discussion started out with the following post: " I am in the market for an older tractor (to be read... cheap). I have been told a diesel holds up better than a gasoline engine as far a wear, tear, neglect and abuse. Since I am looking at older tractors that have probably been through it all, is it better to buy diesel? I do expect to have to do a good bit of work on
