Anyone here ever restore an original loop style ammeter? I found this one and the face is still in great shape, and the needle moves freely. I have the glass and bezel off currently, but do not want to proceed in cleaning or touching anything until I get some advice or tips from guys who have done this. The last thing I want to do is ruin this nice face by using something that will smear or wipe off the markings. As you know - these original loop style ammeters are getting VERY hard to locate.

Also, since the brittle thin gasket between the bezel and base broke into many pieces as I removed the bezel, any luck here finding a new gasket, or just use a small amount of black gasket maker?

Somehow the metal base got a small crack from the top of the lip to about halfway down. I am thinking about using JB Weld to seal it up, then sand down flush to the rest of the base.

Now, just some info for the archives - the back posts are in great shape and appear to be made of brass or copper instead of steel. The face is held in place by two small tabs bent over. The bezal looks like blued metal - like a gun. It is not painted, but is not chromed. The inside of the glass looks like it is sealed with VERY thin small adhesive tape, mine is working its way out from the edges of the inner gasket. The indicator needle is almost paper thin and sticks to the face with the slightest of moisture, I worry how I will clean this.

Hopefully I can get this one working again for my 48 8N restoration attempt.

TIA,
Dan
