I have never understood the change in attitude whereby it is almost mandatory that we thank a serviceman for his sacrifice while serving in the military.
Those if us who served during the Vietnam era, particularly those in the Army or Marines, endured greater sacrifice in terms of bodily injury and pay. Nowadays, with unemployment at high levels, service is a career choice, not an obligation that truly qualifies as a sacrifice.
One has to wonder if recent recruits at Parris Island get the same "appreciated welcome" as we did when disembarking the bus. Probably not.

There is no known history regarding its origins or what service it had done, but the following work was undertaken alone to bring it up to show standard.
