You certainly have the right idea. Hard to believe why they rigged such a rinky-dink mechanism on a very usable saw. Bought a refurbished slightly smaller and apparently older Poulan model for $90 and have run the heck out of it. It has the tool adjust and it is simple and works great. Apparently they think this new wizardry/feature will attract more casual users/buyers, but how many are really interested in a 20 inch saw? More likely most are interested in a 14-16 inch and perhaps an 18 inch saw. Probably marketing did a survey which lauded the tool-less adjustment benefit; would attract more buyers and therefore it was required in any new/updated designs. But the engineers weren't allowed enough money to design it correctly. Would agree tool-less is a desirable feature if it worked. This design doesn't work.

There is no known history regarding its origins or what service it had done, but the following work was undertaken alone to bring it up to show standard.
