Had the opposite happen many years ago.
Early spring morning, still really foggy. I'm sitting on the back steps with my first cup of coffee, about 6 AM. I hear horses clopping on the county road. About to go investigate, when they come out of the fog on my driveway- going TOWARD the barn. Walked right by me, I got in behind, and closed the gate behind them when they went in the pasture. They'd had enough adventure for one night, I guess.
First order of business that day was a little gate latch work.
