If you want it flat you would have to cut the shaft off shy of flush. The front part has to be there for it to work. Other than that you have to use the cone cover. Nothing would be lost to cut the shaft off except to never be able to have a power take off added without replacing the shaft.
This is what you have on the front part of the shaft. it also attaches to the drive shaft. Kinda hard to do away with.

If I missed the meaning of your posts and your just trying to remove the housing you need to push the handle down after it starts to split and lift the back slightly as you twist to the right slightly as you pull back. I call it holding your mouth just right.
