I have successfully patched full diesel and gas tanks using JB weld paste(tootsy roll stick.) The tricks are to sand clean an area about the size of a quarter. then wipe dry and quickly put a match head size dab of JB paste in the leak to seal it. Give this tiny dab about 10 minutes to harden, then clean/ dry the area around this tiny plug.(brake clean works good.) After the tanks dry, mix enough JB weld paste to make a 1/8 inch thick repair about that quarter size. Allow it 12 hrs to harden fully and your good to go.
If the tank flexes and has a crack, JB weld will not work, as the flexing will break loose the hard JB weld. For a flexing crack, a product called "seal all", It comes in a yellow tube and stays flexible. Seal All will stand hot oil, fuel, gasoline, or most other automotive fluids. Needs to be dry to apply.
