I'm not familiar with the 444. But I recently went thru a Marvel carb set up exactly as you describe on a JD 3020. ---- That solenoid closes the main metering jet when the solenoid is denergized (it's spring loaded closed). I presume it's there to shut off the fuel and prevent a hot engine from running on/dieseling at shutdown. The adjustment screw on the solenoid sets the carb high speed mixture. The solenoid should be wired to the "I" (or "IGN") terminal on the ignition switch. ---- Incidentally if it was the guy at the carb shop that told you that solenoid controls the fuel pump, I'd be looking for different carb shop(!)
