Replace any badly worn sections on your "spare" knife. I hope yours has bolt on sections, they are much quicker to replace than riveted ones. I have done both.
Take your time on the first cutting to get to learn the machine. Are you cutting grass or alfalfa? Grass needs better sections and guards than alfalfa or other thicker stem forages to cut easily.
I "retired" my 479 this year, just keeping it as a backup unit for the Kuhn FC300 I bought.
Like Allan said, keep all WELL lubricated.
