Just as a tornado was headed this way a few weeks ago our electricity flashed off just long enough to shut down my computer. I then had to wait for it to boot back up before I could see radar again.
I decided then to purchase a surge protector with a battery back up feature. The model I got will provide power for the computer, monitor, modem, and router for about 30 minutes. If I still had a telephone hooked up via Magic Jack through my computer the battery backup would be even more important. The cheap surge protector I had before has now been retired.
The battery back up units start around $35 and go up and up as you gain features and battery amp hours.
