Each piston has two types of rings, with different tasks to do.
If the compression rings aren't sealing, you will see lots of blowby. If the compression rings are doing their job and the oil control ring(s) aren't doing their job, the pistons will "pump" oil and the engine will use oil and smoke.
Worn valve guides MAY contribute to oil use and smoke, but since this is a flathead engine, the valvespring/valvlestem area is not bathed in oil like it is in an OHV engine and it's not as likely lot's of oil is being pulled past the valvestems.
